News From The Resistance - May The Force Be With Us All

I was watching Star Wars Episode III this morning.

I remember seeing it in the cinema. I walked in to the triumphant Star Wars music playing over the speakers in an attempt to rouse the crowd into a frenzy. It worked for me.

The film began and we were thrust into a space battle, zigging and zagging through death and destruction wrapped in darkness and silence. Anakin and Obi-Wan triumphantly saving the soon-to-be Emperor. It is unfortunate that the original trilogy came first, as the reveal of Palpatine's knowledge of the dark side would have been quite startling to the viewer. Oh, well.

I feel as though Natalie Portman's Padme lost some of her hard, action-girl appeal. I remember a Padme who fought alongside her boyfriend in an Roman like colloseum. In this sixth installment however, Padme is reduced to a simpering fool. Perhaps it's the pregnancy, or maybe it's just bad writing, but I felt that Portman's talents were wasted here.

Anakin's fall from grace was portrayed beautifully, showing his beginning as a hero and decent into villian. The most gut-wrenching scene would have to be the scene set in the Jedi Council chambers, where Anakin kills a group of frightened children. Absolutely no remorse in his eyes whatsoever. At this point, he has become Darth Vader.

Palpatine's puppet master-like presence is chilling and I love the way he has managed to weave every strand together to get what he wants: Absolute control.

Overall I think the film has a few problems, but it is still an enjoyable movie to sit back with on a Saturday night.

My opinion: If you want a good film to watch, check this out. You could do far worse, as this is a great popcorn adventure. Your Saturday will be complete with some Star Wars-y goodness thrown in for good measure.
